Chiang Mai by train

It felt weird and excellent to leave Bangkok, the Thai vortex of brutalist architechture, haggling and decadence. However it was after two hours in the train that I knew the party does not end on Thai railways were the kitchen kart becomes a disco around 8.30 with a disco ball and a ladyboy party starter that actually works for Thai Railways...
Anyway, Chiang Mai is beautiful, its a 13th century city in the middle of the northern jungle surrounded by a medieval moat and equally crazy walls.

Rodrigo! I just heard that SW China had a giant earthquake that has killed so far 9,000 people. Are you alright? Did it reach Thailand? I know you just wrote to us, but another entry saying you are alright would be awesome! thanks!

No worries about this traveller, the quake was in Chengdu China, which is about as far from here as Bhutan, or from Portland to LA. Now the real disaster that I am really nearby is the Cyclone Nargis Catastrophe, over 100,000 dead and 2 million people without food and wading in and drinking water full of rotten corpses...
